Sleeve resection
— is a serious step on the path to health and a new life. If you are considering this option, it is important to understand the difference between the main types of surgery. In modern bariatrics, the most common discussions are about sleeve gastrectomy (Sleeve) and bypass surgery (Bypass).
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
This is the "classic" and most popular method. The essence of the operation lies in changing the shape of the stomach.
How it works: The surgeon removes a large part of the stomach (about 80%), transforming it from a voluminous "pouch" into a narrow tube or "sleeve."
    Weight loss mechanism:
    • Volume: You physically cannot eat much at one time.
    • Hormones: Along with part of the stomach, the area that produces the "hunger hormone" — ghrelin — is removed. The feeling of hunger is significantly reduced.
    Pros:
    • The natural path of food through the gastrointestinal tract is preserved.
    • No risk of "dumping syndrome" (sudden weakness after eating), as seen with bypass surgery.
    • Lower risk of vitamin deficiency in the long term.
  • Gastric Bypass
This is the "gold standard" of bariatrics for patients with a very high BMI or concomitant type II diabetes.
How it works: The surgery is more complex. The surgeon creates a small "pouch" in the upper part of the stomach, which is connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and part of the bowel.
    Weight loss mechanism:
    • Malabsorption: Some calories and fats simply do not have time to be absorbed because the food's path through the intestines is shortened.
    • Micro-portions: The "pouch" holds only 30–50 ml of food.
    Pros:
    • Maximum effective weight loss (up to 70–80% of excess mass).
    • Powerful therapeutic effect for diabetes (many achieve remission).
    • Helps with severe reflux (heartburn).
  • Need to know !
Any bariatric surgery is not a "magic pill," but a powerful tool. For results to last for decades, you will have to follow certain rules:
    • Fractional meals: Small portions 5–6 times a day.
    • Protein priority: Protein is the building block that must be included in every meal.
    • Water balance: You need to drink a lot, but separately from food (at least 30 minutes before and after).
    • Sports: Physical activity is mandatory to maintain skin and muscle tone.
Important: The choice of method is made only by a doctor based on your BMI, health status, presence of diabetes, and your eating habits.
